We would like to let you know that though we are thriving here at Avalon Visions, we are very sad that this year we must say good bye to some of our fellow stores.
In December, after many years of service, we quietly said good-bye to Inner Journey in beautiful downtown Los Gatos. They were a great resource for that community and we hope that somehow another store will be born to help serve the many seekers that were their friends.
In March, we will lose another wonderful member of our communtiy. Gateways Books and Gifts in Santa Cruz has announced that they can no longer afford to keep their doors open. After more than 30 years of service they will "close forever" in mid March.
Here at Avalon Visions, we will do our best to help fill the very large gap from the loss of these great stores. We are keenly aware of the many services that will be lost due to these closures. Currently, we do stock a wide variety of books, including some novels, spiritually diverse metaphysical and inspirational books. Though we are not as large as Gateways, we will be taking more special orders for books that we simply lack shelf space to stock in store.
We also have a truly wonderful selection of greeting cards, candles, incense, and crystals. Our staff is well trained, willing and more than ready to guide you through your shopping experience.
Once again we are dedicated to serving our local spiritual and metaphysical community by offering a wide selection of classes and services designed to be both thought provoking and enlightening. We intend to continue to serve you, our loyal customers and friends, for a very long time to come.

No Tsunami Damage Here

Dear friends:
Last night my husband and I watched CNN for hours as the sad and horrific news from Japan unfolded. Our hearts went out to those earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan.
Having lived through the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, we are all too familiar with what damage an earthquake can cause. That quake was only a 6.9. The one in Japan was an 8.9, literally hundreds of times stronger. It was, in fact, the 5th largest earthquake in recorded history. The quake, as expected, generated devastating tsunamis throughout the Pacific Rim. The damage from the quake alone was astronomical, followed by the horror of the tsunami.
We stayed up waiting to see if a tsunami warning would be issued for our area. Needless to say, a warning was issued in the early morning hours.
This morning, Crescent City was hard hit by an 8 foot tsunami that wreaked havoc on their harbor. Locally, Santa Cruz harbor was also hit. The docks were damaged and many boats were badly damaged.
Luckily for us, Capitola seems to have weathered the tsunami without damage. The Village closed, and we were not allowed access to our shop. It is now almost 4:00 p.m. and there is still a tsunami advisory in effect, therefore we will remain closed throughout the day. The good news is that Avalon Visions, and all of our neighbors are safe and have experienced no ill effects. We plan to resume normal business activity on Saturday, March 12.
We have received dozens of worried phone calls from friends and relatives beginning in the early morning and still continuing this afternoon. So, to all of you who are concerned, we are absolutely fine. We encourage you not to worry about us, but instead to direct your prayers, love and any support that you can share to those victims in areas hardest hit by the earthquake and its resulting tsunami.
